The Castle was founded by William the Conqueror in 1070 and was the administrative centre of the Earldom of Chester. During the reigns of Henry III and Edward I, the castle served as the English military headquarters for the conquest of Wales and later in the Civil War of 1642-46, it was used as the Royalist Headquarters. Visitors to the castle can also enjoy the views from the top of the 12th century Agricola tower .

They have also announced that there are a number of volunteer roles available at the Castle , with the organisation stating that they are looking for ” fun, enthusiastic, reliable people.” Knowledge of history is not essential.
