“In Possible” art by Tim Foxon on display in Handbridge cafe

Artist Tim Foxon, famous for his miniature bike which delighted the public when it was displayed around the city, is bringing his latest exhibition to Nuance Coffee in Handbridge.

‘In Possible’ is a collection of portraits featuring cult figures and recognisable faces from the city of Chester. Each portrait is drawn without looking at the paper until it’s complete.

Says Tim:
“The subjects are individuals who are unique to Chester, people almost every Cestrian can identify, or at least recognize. Performers, Olympians, socialites, local celebrities, and of course, the loudest and proudest of them all: the beloved Town Crier. As long as one or two features in the no-look drawing capture a resemblance or likeness, the rest can get away with being wildly inaccurate.

“When Jake, the owner of Nuance Coffee, invited me to exhibit in the gallery space above his shop, I saw it as the perfect opportunity to showcase some of my ‘no look’ portraits. What started as a bit of a pub trick has since become a regular part of my practice, especially after my experience with Chester Contemporary two years ago. A ‘no look’ portrait involves drawing someone or something, without glancing at the paper until the piece is finished. By focusing solely on the subject, I have to trust my sense of space and hope that my marks on the page capture what I see.”

The exhibition features eleven portraits of people who are either originally from Chester or who live and perform here, individuals who have made a significant impact on the city or achieved remarkable things in television or sports.

“The title IN POSSIBLE is a playful nod to how the drawings are close, but not quite right. Drawing someone without looking seems pretty much impossible and saying “in possible” sounds just close enough to impossible to pass.

“Since completing the portraits, I’ve thought of even more incredible people connected to our great city. I’m hoping to update the exhibition with new works or even put together another show featuring fresh faces.”
