Adam Dandy’s 10 point Chester manifesto

With Chester very much on the up on the last decade, with the award winning Storyhouse and New Market as well as most welcoming/ most beautiful accolades, the forthcoming Harrods Beauty, a thriving restaurant scene and an ever growing number of new businesses, Adam Dandy asks: what could we still improve and do better on ?

Chester is in my opinion the greatest city anywhere in the World, as a city we’ve come a very long way, especially recently, Storyhouse, New Market, Chester Zoo developments, new shops coming to town and lots of positivity generally to name a few things … but there’s always room for improvement, so if you could improve 10 more things, what would you do? Here’s mine, in no particular order:

  • 1. Build council houses on the derelict park & ride on Sealand Rd to help house people in most need.
  • 2. Turn Dee House into The National Roman Museum, on top of Britain’s biggest Roman Amphitheatre, with excavations, glass floors and a passageway into the amphitheatre. Creating Chester’s Jorvik & our cherry on the cake! I know we’re more than just Roman, but use what we’re famous for first and do it well, and then tell our guests about the rest of our history. Not another shortsighted hotel. Failing that demolish it and save a fortune.
  • 3. Switch off the traffic lights on The Bars and Law Courts roundabouts, just leaving pedestrian crossings. Love the fountains now, much better, well done CWAC.
  • 4. Add an exit from MBNA Chester biz pk directly onto the extremely long on slip on the A55 to reduce traffic on wxm rd.
  • 5. Turn the footbridge on Ferry lane or add a new bridge on Bumpers Lane into a bridge for traffic to reduce traffic through the city centre and connect Blacon, Greyhound to Saltney.
  • 6. Fix the actual Fountains on the roundabout, get them sponsored if too expensive.
  • 7. Fund a city centre night shelter for rough sleepers, including addiction support, open all Winter, to reduce people from feeling the need to commit crimes just to be put in prison to stay warm, which is what happened last winter.
  • 8. Introduce free or discounted parking from 3pm, it worked and helped to support local restaurants and shops and prob wouldn’t cost much to do, but could be the life saver local small businesses need, especially after all the cost increases this yr.
  • 9. Delete the bus lanes that caused chaos once and for all. Or if for whatever reason we couldn’t, allow all electric cars to use them.
  • 10. Finally stop Wrexham Council sending people who are homeless to Chester Hotels and force them to help their residents who are homeless where they are more likely to have local family and friends who can help and support them

Concluding, the Dandy’s Topsoil boss and SHARE founder comments :

“Like I said, Chester is an AMAZING city, but there’s always room to improve, and like any business, product or place, the second we stop focusing on ways to improve, that’s when we will fall behind. What 10 things would you improve about Chester?”
