Local Apprentice’s Journey Leads to Buckingham Palace Recognition

A Cheshire West and Chester Council employee has been honoured with an invitation to Buckingham Palace, where he met King Charles III and Queen Camilla, recognising his remarkable career journey.

On Wednesday 4 February, Andrew Morgan from the Council’s Adult Social Care service attended a special Palace event celebrating contributions to public service. The timing is especially significant as the recognition fell during National Apprenticeship Week, which highlights the impact of apprenticeships across the country.

Councillor Sheila Little, Cabinet Member for Adults and Public Health, added:

“Andy’s achievement is truly inspirational. His dedication, compassion and drive embody exactly what makes our workforce so exceptional. Apprenticeships are vital to developing the skilled, passionate professionals our communities rely on, and Andy’s journey shows just how far that opportunity can take you. We are incredibly proud of him and delighted that his hard work has been recognised at the highest level.”

Andy’s story is an inspiring example of the opportunities apprenticeships create.  He joined Cheshire West and Chester Council in 2016 as a Customer Relations Assistant apprentice. His commitment to helping others led him into Adult Social Care in 2019, and in 2023, Andy began the Cheshire West and Chester Social Work Apprenticeship Programme and is due to qualify as a fully‑fledged Social Worker later this year.

Speaking about Andy’s achievements, the Adult Social Care leadership team said:

“Andy is a fantastic example of what apprenticeships can achieve. His journey shows the real impact of investing in early career development and supporting individuals to grow within the council. We are extremely proud of him, not only for representing Adult Social Care at Buckingham Palace, but for everything he has accomplished so far.”

Andy expressed his gratitude for the support he has received throughout his journey,

“It was an amazing experience, I felt both lucky and privileged to be there. It was also a great opportunity to network. The palace staff were amazing, but the highlight was of course meeting the King. We had the opportunity to talk about my achievements and the job I do.

It was an honour for me and my family to represent Cheshire West and Chester in this way.

Regarding my apprenticeship, I feel extremely fortunate to have the opportunity to work towards a degree. After leaving school, I didn’t think this would ever be possible. Studying while working has been both challenging and rewarding but being able to apply what I’m learning directly within my role has been incredibly helpful”

The Council continues to champion apprenticeships as a key pathway to building a strong, skilled workforce for the future – and Andy’s story stands as a shining example during this year’s National Apprenticeship Week celebrations.
