Much loved community theatre group Tip Top productions are offering local performers the opportunity to appear on stage at Chester’s prestigious Storyhouse as they announce plans to stage a musical version of a much-loved film which famously features a racy calendar and a group of plucky women from the WI.
Previously based at The Forum Studio Theatre in Chester, Tip Top Productions have announced a new season of shows and social events which will be staged at various local venues throughout 2022 including “Calendar Girls The Musical” in July which sees the company take to the stage at Storyhouse in Chester for the very first time.
Based on the 2003 film “Calendar Girls” by Tim Firth which itself is based on the true story of a group of women, all members of the Women’s Institute who decide to bare all for a calendar to raise money for a local hospital where one of their husbands was treated for Leukaemia, the musical features music and lyrics by Gary Barlow.
The show’s production team are currently keen to hear from potential cast members with auditions due to be held at Christleton High School near Chester on Sunday 6th March from 10am. Prior to the auditions taking place, an informal read through is being held at Tip Tip’s rehearsal studio in Park Street, Wrexham on Monday 28th February at 7.30pm.
Speaking about the auditions, the shows Director, Peter Swingler OBE said “Calendar Girls the Musical” draws strongly on the idea of a supportive community and the strength of friendships between a group of women. There are many ensemble scenes for the whole cast and the actual six “Calendar Girls”. The production requires a large cast including men and women playing ages 16 to 80s (our cast will be 18+) and so we are keen to welcome anyone interested in auditioning to an informal read through of the script at our rehearsal studio in Wrexham prior to the auditions taking place in Chester. It really will be a great show to be involved with as we take to the stage at Storyhouse for the first time.”
Other shows planned for 2022 include the smash hit musical “CATS” which is being staged at Theatr Clwyd near Mold from 16th -19th March and the stage version of classic BBC Comedy “Keeping Up Appearances” which features the social climbing Hyacinth Bucket played memorably on TV by Dame Patricia Routledge. Social events include “Made From Scratch”, a showcase for new writing and “Gender Bend”, an open mic night with a gender twist.
