Lord Mayor Margaret Parker cut the ribbon at the new look Northgate arena, alongside other dignitaries including Samantha Dixon MP and Sheriff of Chester Alan Smith. The centre opened to the public in May and features an enhanced gym, refreshed pool areas, new sauna facilities and many other refurbishments as well as a Library express service in the foyer.

Speaking at the launch The Lord Mayor commented:

“The Northgate Arena has been a hugely important part of the lives of Chester residents for generations. It is a place where people have learnt to swim, discovered new sports, improved their fitness, made friends, and created lasting memories. It has also welcomed visitors from across our borough and beyond, making it a valued community asset for many years. Facilities such as Northgate Arena play a vital role in supporting the health and wellbeing of our residents. Having access to high-quality leisure, health and wellbeing opportunities helps people of all ages to lead active, happy and healthy lives. Whether someone is taking their first swimming lesson, training for a competition, attending a fitness class, or simply enjoying time with family and friends, these facilities make a real difference. ”

She said that the refurbishment represented a significant investment in the future of the community. “It forms part of the Council’s One City Plan for Chester, which places wellbeing at the heart of the city experience and encourages healthier lifestyles for everyone who lives, works and visits here. I am particularly pleased that Cheshire West and Chester Council has invested in Northgate Arena to ensure it remains fit for the future. This investment will allow the Arena to continue serving residents for many years to come, supporting future generations of families as they enjoy all that this much-loved facility has to offer “

Thanking everyone involved in delivering the project from contractors and project teams and staff she praised their commitment and dedication throughout. The launch day also recognised the late David Woods and his contribution to Brio leisure. The Community Room was renamed the David Woods Community Room in memory of David , who served as Chair of Brio Leisure from October 2019 until August 2022.

“David stepped down from the role due to ill health and sadly passed away in October 2024.David made an enormous contribution to Brio Leisure and to the communities it serves. His leadership, passion and unwavering commitment helped guide the organisation through challenging times, and he worked tirelessly to secure funding that helped make this refurbishment project possible. The improvements we celebrate today stand as part of his lasting legacy. It is especially fitting that we recognise David’s contribution here at Northgate Arena, a facility that reflects so many of the values he championed: community, wellbeing, inclusion and opportunity for all. We are honoured that David’s wife, Janet, is with us today as we remember his service and celebrate the positive impact he had on countless residents across our borough. I am sure you will join me in expressing our gratitude for all that David achieved and in remembering him with great affection and respect. Northgate Arena has long been at the heart of our community, and with these improved facilities, I am confident it will continue to inspire people to be active, stay healthy and come together for generations to come.”
