A heady mix of comedy and Greek tragedy, with a smattering of girl power – are on offer on stage at Storyhouse on Saturday 6 August, courtesy of a Chester-based theatre group.

Sunrise Productions theatre group are getting ready to bring their own unique take on ancient Greek tragedy Antigone to the Garrett Theatre at Storyhouse on Saturday. Crown and Clan Divided is an adaptation of the classic tale penned by Sophocles as part of the Oedipus trilogy and first performed around 441BC.

Cast and crew are currently in rehearsals for the production, which will run at 2pm and 7.30pm on Saturday 6 August. The play has been written by local playwright, director and actor Chris Mapp, who founded the theatre company in 2019.

The main theme of the play is the tension between individuals who fight against the state and laws that they judge to be wrong. It is also explores the themes of family loyalty and sibling love.

Sunrise Productions was established with the aim of making theatre and performance art accessible to everyone, with tickets prices kept low and productions taken out on the road to different community venues.

The company has to date produced a variety of work for the stage, along with radio drama and film. Previous productions have included Today I Wrote Everything, a collection of absurd drama and comedy, performed around Cheshire and at Storyhouse.

Company founder Chris Mapp said: “We are pleased to be bringing Crown and Clan Divided to the stage at Storyhouse. It’s been great to see the cast and crew working so hard to bring life to this production and make the characters their own. This production demonstrates our passion of making theatre unrestricted by cost or location. We welcome all to Storyhouse on 6 August to see our drama and think about getting involved in any way at all. We have lots of plans for the future, including street theatre, film and podcasts, as well as taking our productions out on tour. We are a fully inclusive performance group and we welcome people of all ages and backgrounds to get in touch if they would like to take part.”
